River City Rodeo returns to Evansville for two nights on Friday, September 11, and Saturday, September 12, 2026. The Hoosier Cowboy Association is bringing the event to the Vanderburgh 4-H Center, with gates scheduled to open at 5 p.m. both nights.
This is a useful weekend to plan rather than improvise. The rodeo is north of Evansville's central hotel and restaurant areas, parking carries a separate charge, and families interested in mutton busting must register children for a limited number of spots.

What happens in the arena
The River City Rodeo is an NCPRA-sanctioned, points-earning stop rather than a themed stage show. The organizer lists bull riding, barrel racing, bareback and saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, breakaway roping, team roping, and mutton busting among the events.
New spectators do not need to memorize a rulebook before arriving. Bull and bronc riders are trying to complete an eight-second ride, while barrel racing rewards the fastest clean run around the pattern. Friday's program includes a remembrance marking the 25th anniversary of September 11 and recognition of veterans and first responders. Saturday continues with a second night of competition. The organizer currently describes the event window as 5–10 p.m. but does not publish a minute-by-minute arena schedule, so do not plan a late arrival around one specific event.
Mutton busting requires its own plan
Children do not automatically enter mutton busting with a rodeo ticket. The official registration page limits participation to children ages 4–6 who weigh less than 50 pounds. The entry fee is $20 per child, and a parent or guardian must sign a waiver.
Mutton busting is scheduled from 6:30–7 p.m. each night, with check-in 15 minutes early. The organizer lists only 20 spots Friday and 15 Saturday, so register ahead rather than promising a child they can sign up after arrival.
Families who are watching instead of riding will find a petting zoo and face painting outside the main competition, along with food trucks and local vendors. The event page also lists a cigar bar, so adults should establish a clear meeting point if their group splits up.
Plan the 4-H Center arrival
The Vanderburgh 4-H Center is at the northern edge of the city, not downtown. Search the full street address before choosing a room or rental. A listing labeled “Evansville” can still create a very different drive depending on which side of town it occupies.

Bring a payment method for the $5 parking charge and allow time to enter the grounds after parking. Ground rules can change, so check the organizer's FAQ before packing coolers, large bags, or chairs.
Where should an overnight group stay?

The weekend supports two service organizations
The Hoosier Cowboy Association says proceeds benefit Oliver's Heroes, which supports retired service dogs, and Mustangs of Service, which works with veterans through hands-on programs involving wild mustangs. That community purpose is part of the event, but the practical reason to attend remains a full two-night rodeo with sanctioned competition and family activities.
